Privacy Policy
Effective Date: February 13, 2026
Cognicard ("we", "our", or "the app") is developed by Jeremy Peronto. This Privacy Policy explains how information is collected, used, and shared when you use Cognicard.
1. Information We Collect
Information You Provide
- Study content: Notes, text, and images you provide for flashcard creation.
- Voice input: Spoken answers during voice-based review sessions.
- Profile name: An optional display name stored locally on your device.
Information Collected Automatically
- App preferences: Settings such as daily goal, speech rate, and reminder preferences, stored locally using UserDefaults.
- Subscription status: Managed by Apple through StoreKit. We do not collect or store payment information.
2. How Your Information Is Used
- Flashcard generation: Text and images you provide may be sent to OpenAI's API (GPT-4o-mini) to generate flashcards. This data is sent only when you initiate card creation and is not stored by us on any server.
- Answer evaluation: During review, your spoken or typed answers may be sent to OpenAI's API to evaluate correctness. The app first attempts local matching before making any API call.
- Text-to-speech: If you use an AI voice, card text is sent to OpenAI's TTS API to generate audio. Generated audio is cached locally on your device for offline use. The system (Apple) voice does not send any data externally.
- Speech recognition: Voice review uses Apple's on-device speech recognition (SFSpeechRecognizer) configured for on-device processing only. Your voice audio is not transmitted to any server for recognition.
- Camera: Photos you take are processed locally or sent to OpenAI's Vision API for flashcard generation. Images are not stored on any server.
3. Data Storage
All your study data — flashcards, decks, review history, and statistics — is stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. We do not operate any backend servers or databases. Your data stays on your device (and in your iCloud account if you use iCloud backup).
4. Third-Party Services
- OpenAI API: Used for flashcard generation, answer evaluation, and text-to-speech. Content is sent to OpenAI's servers for processing. OpenAI's data usage policy applies to this processing. We use the API in a way that does not allow OpenAI to train on your data (API usage is excluded from model training by default). See OpenAI's Privacy Policy.
- Apple StoreKit: Subscription purchases are handled entirely by Apple. We do not receive or store your payment details. See Apple's Privacy Policy.
5. Tracking and Analytics
Cognicard does not track you. We do not use any analytics SDKs, advertising frameworks, or tracking technologies. We do not collect device identifiers, IP addresses, or usage analytics. The app does not contain any advertising.
6. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties. The only external data transmission is to OpenAI's API as described above, which occurs only when you explicitly initiate actions that require AI processing.
7. Data Retention
Your study data remains on your device until you choose to delete it. You can reset all data from Settings > Reset All Progress. Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data. Data sent to OpenAI for processing is subject to OpenAI's data retention policies.
8. Children's Privacy
Cognicard is suitable for users of all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The app's functionality is the same for all users regardless of age.
9. Your Rights
Since all data is stored locally on your device, you have full control over your data at all times. You can:
- View all your data within the app
- Export your decks using the share/export feature
- Delete all data via Settings > Reset All Progress
- Uninstall the app to remove all data
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the "Effective Date" at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
